JCC Early Childhood Program Plans Week of the Young Child Activities

March 11, 2002

The Early Childhood Department of Johnston Community College will host and co-sponsor several events in celebration of the Week of the Young Child, April 7 through 13.

The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the nation's largest organization of early childhood professionals.  The purpose of the Week of the Young Child is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to support the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

The theme of this year's event is "Children's Opportunities - Our Responsibility."  The scheduled events are:

  • April 3: Breakfast of Champions.  The Early Childhood Department/Smart Start Training Center and the Partnership for Children of Johnston County will cosponsor this event to honor and recognize individuals for their work on behalf of young children.
  • April 9:  The Early Childhood Department of JCC will host two workshops by the N.C. Farm Bureau.  The workshop, titled "Ag in the Classroom," relates agriculture to the early childhood curriculum.  The presenter of the workshops will be Louise Lamm.  Workshops will be conducted in the afternoon and evening.  Refreshments will be provided by the Johnston County Farm Bureau Women.
  • April 11:  The Early Childhood Department of JCC will host two workshops by UNC-TV's Ready to Learn Program.  The workshops include "Jay, Jay, the Jet Plane," which focuses on science, nature, and life skills and "Arthur: Hooray for Health," which focuses on health and nutrition.  The presenter of the workshops will be Pam Hines.  She will conduct an afternoon and evening workshop.
  • April 13:  Joe Scruggs in Concert.  Cosponsored by the Early Childhood Department and the Partnership for Children of Johnston County.  This is an event that can be enjoyed by the whole family.  Tickets can be purchased at Paul A. Johnston Auditorium Box Office.

For more information concerning any of these events, contact Terri Hill, Smart Start Training Center Technician, 919-209-2217.
