Johnston Community College Foundation Honors Distinguished Citizen May 15, 2002 John R. "Doc" Windley was awarded the 2002 Distinguished Citizen Award by the Johnston Community College Foundation Monday evening, May 13. Mr. Windley, who is known throughout Johnston County for his more than 30 years as band director at Smithfield-Selma Senior High School and Smithfield-Selma Middle School, received a macquette of "The Rescue," a sculpture designed by JCC art instructor Frank Creech. "The Rescue" symbolizes the distinguished citizen's "selfless acts and tireless efforts through a lifetime of service to the people of this community." Mr. Windley is a member of the Johnston Community College Board of Trustees as well as a member of the College Foundation. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and serves or has served on the board of directors of the Salvation Army, the JCC Auditorium and the Four Oaks Bank of Smithfield. He is a long-time member of First Missionary Baptist Church in Smithfield where he served as treasurer and sang in the choir. About 250 people attended the program and reception held in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium and Lobby on the JCC campus. The program included tributes to Windley from friends and colleagues. Music was provided by the Techniques jazz band, which Mr. Windley founded after his initial retirement from SSS. The College Foundation has established the John R. "Doc" Windley Music Endowment at JCC in Mr. Windley's honor. |
