JCC Paralegal Student Wins Essay Contest

March 15, 2002

Laura CubillosLaura Cubillos, a freshman in the Paralegal Technology Program at Johnston Community College, has won the first-place award in the Student Scholarship Contest offered by the North Carolina Paralegal Association Inc. (NCPA).

Cubillos, a Clayton resident, was required to write the essay last fall for the Introduction to Paralegal Studies class. Students were not required to submit the essay for the contest, but they were encouraged to do so. Laura was contacted in mid-March about her award.

As the first place winner, she will receive a $400 cash prize, a one-year student membership in NCPA, and the opportunity to attend NCPA's annual seminar in New Bern. In addition, her essay, "I have chosen to be a paralegal because..." will be published in the summer issue of the FORUM, the quarterly magazine published by the NCPA.

Last year another of JCC's paralegal students, Misty Lockamy (Hughes), won first place in the same contest.
