JCC To Graduate 2002 Class of Nurses

May 8, 2002

Johnston Community College will graduate its 2002 class of nurses May 9 during National Nurse’s Week.

Twenty students have completed the program this semester. The JCC nursing program is among the best nursing programs in the state, Kay Lanier, program director, said.

JCC nursing graduates have posted a 100 percent pass rate on the State Nursing Board exam for five consecutive years and a 99.3 percent pass rate over the last 12 years. The state average for all programs—associate’s and bachelor’s—is about 85 percent.

"When we made 100 percent the third time, we set a state record," Lanier said. "We’ve continued beyond that, and our passing rate is better than any other program in the state."

Lanier attributes the student success to "the hard-working students we recruit, to administrative support and especially, to a dedicated and talented faculty."

"We do a lot of teaching in the clinical areas, and our students are continuously supervised by faculty. My faculty members expert classroom teachers who have superb clinical experience, and they share that experience with the students."

While the exam pass rate of her students is "unprecedented," Lanier said that she is most proud of the students’ performance after they are licensed. "We are most proud of the employer satisfaction reports and their requests for more of our graduates, even prior to this critical nursing shortage we are presently experiencing."

Graduates of the JCC nursing program are Tammy Blake, Middlesex; Lolita Upchurch, Raleigh; Allison Johnson, Four Oaks; Andrea Juckett, Goldsboro; and Gaylian Barbour, Clayton; Joyce Parham, Dunn; Altovise Norfleet, Fayetteville; and Dusty Wise, Goldsboro; Marilyn Pezzullo, Clayton; Katie Fuquay, Fuquay-Varina; LuAnne Killebrew, Smithfield; Victoria Smith, Clayton; Pam Rowell, Benson; and Nicole Porter, Goldsboro; Michelle Guess, Zebulon; Michelle Stephenson, Kenly; Nicole Pelletier, Smithfield; Brett Johnson, Godwin; Scott Smith, Erwin; Michelle Rich, Clayton; and Wendy Ross, Newton Grove.
