Johnston Community College Opens Accelerated Information Technology Academy

Johnston Community College is currently recruiting students for a newly formed Information Technology Academy. The academy, a result of grant funding from the US Department of Labor American Competitiveness and Workforce Improvement Act, is a collaborative effort with Wake Technical Community College and the Capital Area Workforce Development Board.

The IT Academy is designed to train employees to meet the needs for network design/administration, technical support, web development/administration and programming/software engineering. Responding to industry demands, the IT Academy will offer multiple certifications, including Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, CompTIA A+, and CompTIA Network+. Students completing the certification training will be eligible for higher paying jobs and these certification credits may be applied towards an associate degree.

Heading up the IT Academy is Derek Brown, Dewana Hartley, and Anthony Penny (pictured from left below). All alumni of Johnston Community College with degrees in information systems programming, the IT Academy staff spent 14 days in Atlanta, Georgia, training for and receiving dual certifications in Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. Hartley will serve as academy coordinator and all three will be instructors for the program.
