Etheridge Hosts Congressional Breakfast Meeting at JCC

About 50 representatives of local town and county governments attended the meeting. Topics of discussion included the effect of Gov. Easley’s proposed budget cuts on local municipalities and the far reaching economic effects of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. "The events of 9/11 really created a whole new set of challenges for our country," Etheridge said. "Unemployment is the highest its been in North Carolina since 1983." He added that the federal government needs to invest in the areas of education, science and technology and exports. "People don’t want a pat on the back, they want a job," Etheridge said. "You can encourage them but that doesn’t pay the bills. |
