Johnston Community College Collaborating With Other Community Colleges Across State To Offer Court Reporting and Captioning Program

Beginning fall semester 2002, Johnston Community College will join Lenoir Community College, Catawba Valley Community College, and Bladen Community College to offer a new degree program in court reporting and captioning.

Graduates of this program should qualify for employment as an official court reporter, freelance reporter, television and video captioner, stenointerpreter, conference reporter, stenographer, or transciptionist.

Students who enroll in this curriculum receive instruction and interact with the instructor via a two-way interactive network of monitors and microphones. Students can see and hear all participants just as if they were in the same room. Students watch monitors and listen to the instructor as dictation is given, use their steno writers to record the dictation; and transcribe the dictated material using a court reporting software program.

Fayetteville resident Betty Lyons, pictured, began her studies at Lenoir Community College in Kinston, but will finish the program at JCC. For Lyons, this new program at JCC will offer a shorter traveling distance to receive the court reporting instruction. A former FBI employee, she is most interested in working as a television and video captioner when she completes her studies.
