Admission Criteria
The following applies for classes entering Fall 2009
- An applicant must submit a JCC application and a program specific application. Applications must be received in the Student Services Office by
March 1st of each year. The College reserves the right to extend the application period when warranted. The Sonography programs begin the fall semester of each year.
- Official transcripts from high school and all colleges attended must be on file by March 1 to process the application. The applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalency and meet the minimum requirements for ENG 111 and MAT 080.
- The applicant must have attained a minimum grade of “C” on two science courses with labs. One science course with lab must be a physics course. PHY 110 & PHY 110A may be taken to satisfy the physics requirement. The other science course must be biology, advanced biology or chemistry or equivalent.
- The applicant must have attained a minimum grade of "C" on one algebra course (high school or college level) regardless of math placement scores.
- Diploma Applicants. Currently certified allied health professionals* with an associate's or bachelor's degree are not required to complete an associate's degree in sonography. Allied health professionals* must be currently certified by their certifying agency prior to registration in a sonography program.
- Associate Degree Applicants. Applicants who do not hold an associate's or bachelor's degree in an allied health profession* will be required to complete the associate degree level. Current and unrestricted verification of certification on the NC Nursing Assistant Registry is required. The applicant must provide a copy of CNA I certification. - The applicant must be interviewed on campus by an admissions counselor and attend a mandatory sonography information session by March 1.
- The applicant must complete the HOBET test by March 1. The test may be taken only one time per academic year and must be taken at JCC. The cut off score for reading is 50. Scores from other schools will not be accepted. The Academic Enrichment Center offers a HOBET prep program. A study guide is available from the bookstore. More information about the HOBET can be obtained from www.eriworld.com. Applicants may take the HOBET once per academic year and test scores are valid for two years.
- The student must possess a current Health Care Provider CPR (adult and child) certification. The CPR certification cannot lapse while enrolled in the Sonography program.
- If accepted, the student must attend a mandatory orientation by the program director or designee prior to program registration. Students will receive a letter from the Sonography program director indicating the date of the orientation session.
- A completed Student Medical Form (physical examination by a physician) is required prior to registration.
- If admitted, the student will submit to a criminal background check and drug screening as directed by affiliating clinical agencies. Enrolled students are subject to random drug screens as directed by affiliating clinical agencies. Clinical agencies reserve the right to deny students access based on criminal background. This denial may result in the inability of the student to successfully complete the program. Certifying agencies may deny certification eligibility due to a criminal background.
- Additional points will be given on the point ranking sheet for applicants who have completed a medical terminology curriculum course or a high school health occupations course with a "C" or better.
*Associate's or bachelor's degree patient care-related allied health professionals accepted include: nursing, radiography, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, sonography, and emergency medicine (paramedic).
