NC Rescue Technician VMR and Ropes Class FAQ
Question: Can I take just the VMR classes and not the General classes and be VMR certified?
Answer: No, in order to obtain RT-VMR certification you must complete the General and VMR classes
set forth by NCDOI/OSFM, see course listing at following site:
www.ncdoi.com/OSFM/FireAndRescueCommission/Documents/Certification/RescueTechCourseListing.pdf
Question: Are there any crossover classes from Firefighter I/II or the old Emergency Rescue Tech. classes?
Answer: Yes, see previous page of this document for Firefighter I/II crossover credits and visit following site:
www.ncdoi.com/OSFM/FireAndRescueCommission/Documents/Certification/RescueTechCrossoverListing.pdf
Question: What counts for the medical requirement class?
Answer: The Firefighter I Emergency Medical Care class will count for the medical requirement or if you are
certified through the NC Office of EMS as a Medical Responder or higher, you can forward a copy of your
certification to OSFM via mail or fax (go to www.ncdoi.com OSFM Section for mail/fax information)
Question: How do I know what class credits I have?
Answer: You can view your NCDOI/OSFM transcript by going to the following site:
http://osfmweb.ncdoi.net/public/Student.html
Question: How many hours are required for continuing education for RT VMR or Ropes certification?
Answer: The NCDOI does not require a set number of hours for continuing education. It is strongly encouraged
that the AHJ set a number of hours per departmental requirements to maintain proficiency with skills taught
during the certification program. The only set con-ed hours are for Instructors and Certified Fire Investigators
www.ncdoi.com/OSFM/FireAndRescueCommission/Documents/Certification/RecertificationRevisions.pdf
Question: What reference material or text books are needed for the RT certification training?
Answer: Unfortunately, there is not a single book that covers all of the RT VMR and Ropes classes. There
will be handouts given to students during the above RT classes, and the reference materials will be shared with
students at each class. Students still need to be prepared to take notes because some things covered may
not necessarily be written out on the handouts but be covered during presentations. Any student wishing to
further their knowledge or become instructors will need to / have to obtain the reference materials.
Question: Can I use my own harness for the ropes classes?
Answer: Yes, as long as it meets the NFPA 1983 Standard and has a General Rating. Firefighter or extrication
gloves that have been exposed to contaminants will not be able to be used on the ropes or other software,
webbing, prusiks, harnesses, etc. Rope rescue gloves will be available for personnel to use, or personnel can
purchase their own leather style glove for rope use only.
Question: I don’t see a rappelling class listed in the RT Ropes portion. Is this covered during the certification
process?
Answer: Yes. The RT Ropes - Fixed Ropes and Victim Removal class covers the rappelling and ascending
part of the certification process. The Fixed Ropes class is a very physically and mentally demanding class.
Question: Do I have to have my RT-VMR certificate in hand before taking the RT-Ropes classes?
Answer: No. As long as you have completed the RT-VMR class credits, you can take the RT-Ropes classes.
Question: Is there not a class in the RT-Ropes portion to teach students how to tie knots?
Answer: No. There is no specific class to teach how to tie knots in the RT-Ropes portion because it is
covered during RT-General Ropes. The RT-Ropes portion is a Technician Level certification and students will
be expected to be proficient in the tying of knots. A review session will be set-up during one of the classes.
