Special Interest

Non self-supporting courses are free to senior citizens aged 65 or older.  There are no fee exemptions allowed for self-supporting courses. The registration fee must be paid by all class participants. Registration fees vary depending upon cost of the course and minimum enrollment of students. No refunds are permitted for withdrawal from self-supporting courses unless the course is canceled by the College. Self-supporting courses are noted by (SS) beside the class title.  For senior computer classes, all students must pay the technology fee regardless of age. 

Written directions and some maps are available for JCC locations.

Interior Decorating and Design (SS*)

Learn how to recreate your home using what you already have. Course content includes how to select color combinations, floor and wall coverings, window treatments, furniture styles and placement, and lighting; plus many tips and trade secrets, where to find great accessories, and how to work with an interior designer. Preregistration is required.

Staging Tips for Home Sellers (SS*)

Learn how to stage and decorate your home for maximum appeal to buyers. First, peak their interest with curb appeal and then get them inside to “seal the deal”. No experience necessary. Bring photos to class of the exterior and interior of your home and yard. Preregistration is required.

A Beginner's Look at Genealogy (SS*)

An introduction to the resources and procedures available for exploring your ancestry, with a lot of learning by doing, using resources available in the Johnston County Heritage Center on Market Street in Smithfield. Preregistration is required.

Clowning Education and Fun (SS*)

The instructor clown teaches all three clown faces, including application of makeup for all three faces. Basic balloon instruction, including learning to tie basic animal and small balloon art, is included. The history of clowning is covered including pictures of clowns as well as correct clown costumes will be shown. Some pocket magic will also be taught. This is a fun class, but a lot of work. Come to learn to be a real clown. PLEASE CALL 989-2128 FOR A SUPPLIES LIST PRIOR TO CLASS. Preregistration is required.

Basic Home Repair (SS*)

This course is for the beginner as well as those with limited “do-it-yourself” (DIY) experience. Even if you’ve never driven a nail or cut a board, you will learn the basics in order to repair and/or upgrade many features of any residential property. Pre-registration is required.

Stress Management (SS*)

We all have stress in our lives but sometimes it can become overwhelming. Why not come to a class to learn more about stress, how we can better handle it and also have a place that we can talk about our stresses! In this class, we will do meditation exercises and relaxation techniques that might help relieve our stress. Come join us!!! Pre-registration is required.

2Young2Retire (SS*)

The 2young2retire course is a process that helps you get clear about your choices and future possibilities. Working with a 2young2retire Certified Facilitator and Life Coach, you’ll discover what matters most to you and where your skills and experience could be put to good purpose. Who am I? What am I doing here? We start asking these big questions, in one form or another, around age 50. What if your big answers could launch a whole new, more meaningful life in the years ahead? We will discuss topics like: work that matters, have you ever considered being your own boss, money-what are my thoughts about it, wellness, and travel. Optional book available for purchase from instructor (approx. $30). Preregistration is required.
